Recent Project: Master Bathroom Renovation

Before I share my most recent bathroom renovation...I have to confess something!

I've become obsessed with Pinterest!  I've been dabbling with this site for a few months now but lately I've been using it as a great tool to save pictures of architectural elements and interior spaces that catch my eye.  Before Pinterest, I would save images to my hard drive which was a memory hog.  I was also doing a subpar job of documenting the pictures' source.  Now my pictures on Pinterest link back to the source.  I can also direct clients to these pictures to see what they like and dislike about these spaces...a great way to further define the client's wants and needs for their own home.  So, check out my Pinterest boards here.  If you "follow all" my boards you'll see everything I pin.

Master Bathroom Renovation

Below are before and after pictures so you can see the design decisions that were made along the way and the resulting transformation!

Here's the before picture...

After the new layout, functionality, and look and feel of the bathroom was determined, then the fun part of selecting the materials came next.  Below is a sample of the items to be used.

Here is the after picture.  The toilet was moved further down the wall to allow room for a vanity with double sinks.   The window treatment references the color of the "wood-like" porcelain tiles.  The use of a handmade oriental rug is a favorite look of mine for a bathroom.

Here's the before picture of the shower which was in desperate need of replacing...

Here's the after picture...

Here's the after picture with painted wood cabinet with inset doors and drawers, Corian countertop with small ogee edge, and upper cabinet for extra storage.   Recessed medicine cabinets also add extra storage.  A pocket door was installed to further open up the space.

Here's one more before picture...

The vanity above, was replaced with a linen closet...

I've helped the same client with several projects throughout their home.  Here are a few more before and afters...

Their son's bathroom used to look like this...

And now looks like this...  The shower curtain fabric is from the talented local fabric designer Victoria Larson.  You can check out her beautiful fabrics here.

Here's a before picture of their living room...

The gallery of the client's travel photos are now hung and chairs were given a fresh redo...

Here's a before picture of their nook...

Below, the custom roman shade completes the look.  Another great website for inspiration is Houzz.  The picture below was featured by them, here.

Stay tuned for my next post which features the super cool Hobo store in downtown Annapolis!

Have a great week!

Recent Project: Pretty Master Bedroom Redo

About a year ago I was contacted by a client who was in need of a master bedroom and bathroom renovation.   We started with the master bathroom and when that was completed we moved to the bedroom which was recently finished.  It has been a fun project and I'm very happy with the results (and so is my client!)

They live in a historic home in downtown Annapolis.  Below is their pretty side door.  Isn't their portico with the copper roof great?

Below is a before picture of their bedroom.

Here's the after picture.  We transformed the room with a spring green color on the walls, a vibrant new rug and new fabrics for chairs, bench and bed.

Below is a before picture with the new rug spread out so we can discuss color direction.

The Osborne and Little stripe fabric on the bench and shams worked beautifully with the rug and has the airy fresh feeling we were looking for.   Existing furniture was rearranged and we added some great artwork that my client already had.

On the other side of the room is a tv sitting area.  Below is the before picture.

And, here it is now with newly upholstered chairs and ottoman.

We added the same striped fabric to the chair pillows.  In the background you can see we used a deep pink fabric for the bedskirt and headboard for contrast.

Earlier this year you may remember I did a post on this master bathroom renovation.   I had taken the pictures before the shower doors were installed so here are the most recent pics.  Below is a reminder of what the bathroom used to look like.

And here is the finished result.

One more before picture...

And the after.  You can learn more about the bathroom renovation process...here.

Below is my client's front door with a reminder of the thanksgiving holiday that is around the corner.

I hope you and your family have a great holiday!

Recent Project: Pretty Bathroom Renovation

One of the first things I ask of clients is to share inspiration photos of rooms they like.  When my client showed me inspiration pictures for their master bathroom, I was pretty excited because some of the pictures were in my own inspiration files for my own house.  The bathrooms were classic, spa like with a slight seaside feel.

Here's the BEFORE picture of my client's bathroom.

Here's the AFTER picture.  We used Wythe Blue, one of my favorite Ben Moore colors, on the walls.

Porcelain tiles that look like wood were used on the floor.

Here's the BEFORE of the same window.  The client opted to forgo the tub in the new design.

The toilet is now in it's own room with a pocket door.

I'm thrilled with how the shower turned out.  The marble subway tile is even more stunning in person.

The brushed nickel has a soft warm glow.

The marble mosaic floor was a splurge but well worth the investment.

We made some changes to the bedroom, like this pretty light fixture.

A BEFORE picture.

The new bed, bench, duvet cover and carpet make a big difference.

Another great project and another great client!  But I also want to mention the folks who helped transform this bathroom....The architect, Jeff Gallaher of Severna Park, the builder, Koehne Contracting of Annapolis, MD and the tile installer, Don Conrad of Arnold, MD.  I've worked with this group on several projects and their workmanship is superb.

Have a good weekend!

Bathroom Inspiration Pictures plus 2011 Resolutions

OK...I have to admit this post is a bit more self serving than most because for the first time ever I've written down my resolutions and I hope by sharing them with you will make me more accountable for fulfilling them.  So here it goes...

2011 Resolutions:
  • Be a better listener and don't give advice until asked for it
  • Go out with "the girls" more
  • Be more patient with my children

1.   My Bathroom Renovation

Since there was a lot of interest in my bathroom renovation post (including a comment by Eddie Ross, formerly with House Beautiful and Martha Stewart Living) plus I know many of you are planning bathroom renovations this year, I wanted to share my favorite bathroom inspiration pictures that I discovered over the past year.  Enjoy them...

One day we hope to add an outdoor shower to your house.  Currently we rinse off the kids and dog with a garden hose after a swim in the creek.  How nice to be able to rinse off in an outdoor shower!

Even though the style of the following bathrooms vary...modern, coastal, traditional, I feel they all share something.  Their design and architectural details are complex but the final result was of one of both beauty and simplicity.

I really like the horizontal wood paneling, zinc counter top, industrial light fixture, and the striped stain treatment on the wood floors.  The open vanity takes up less visual space so opens up the room plus allows for the use of cool baskets.

I like how the vertical tiles make the ceiling seem higher then it is.  The stained wood cabinet is a great contrast against the grey tile in the shower and floor.

This bathroom made the list because of the blue accent tile used to define the sink and niche areas.

Traditional but fresh...love the dark floors against the white tub and cabinets.  The cafe curtains let in light but provide privacy.  They maximized the use of mirrors which reflects light and mounted the accent lights right on the mirrors.

The open selves in this bathroom look great...just be sure you don't mind keeping it tidy.

The yellow and grey floral window treatments definitely make this bathroom great.  Sarah Richardson from Sarah's House designed this bathroom.  Her show is one of my favorites so add it to your DVR now!

Great use of accent tile in the tub by Carolyn Espley.

Just gorgeous with the combination of the soft window treatment, different size tiles on the walls, and metal accents.

I really like the contrast of the dark tile and floors against the white trim and tub.

The painted wood paneled wall and stairs leading to the copper tub are so unique.

Wallpaper has been popular for a few years now and I'm loving it in this bathroom.  The wallpaper is not the only thing you see and it blends so nicely with the rest of the bathroom.  Great light fixture over the tub too.

Very european with the use of furniture and an antique rug.

Great light fixtures and love the mix of the grey vanity material with the warm wood floor.  Just realized the color grey with wood is a common theme for me.

Another one be Sarah Richardson.  Her use of tile is great including the use of little black accent tiles on the floor.

The decorative geometric pattern of the tile looks fantastic against the wood tub!
